Agreed.  It's a mess.

Clearly your choice is different from mine.  I found that most ports
depended on ImageMagick 7, not 6.  And since it's not a legacy
version, it made sense to go that way.

Yes.  The desktops should migrate too.

Of course, the correct thing to do is to ensure that both ImageMagicks
can coexist.  I wasn't aware of the desktop issues, since I don't use
them, but basically at the moment the conflicts really make life
difficult.  Does anybody see a solution?  For Emacs, we could create
versions for ImageMagic 6 and for ImageMagick 7, but that seems very
distasteful.
