When I compiler all I say is "make buildworld." I also use cvsup8 and have a number of successful cvsup's and build's since 26 Jan. Four of them have been run since 1 Feb. I don't have any idea what is wrong at your site. I don't have any symlinks but do mount /usr/src and /usr/obj on different HD's.
