What -was- causing a problem nearly 100% of the time has now gone to not causing trouble at all. Unfortunately I can't keep running with libpthread because of threads/84778, so I can't wait to see if the trouble surfaces again. It may have been a fluke or just the way the box was configured that day. (I've been moving sites from another box to this one, and in the process there have been any number of hostname/DNS changes.)
