Just cvsup'd my ports tree and running "make index" now appears to work
for some reason now:
# make index
Generating INDEX - please wait.. Done.
# 

So does "portsdb -u" as a matter of fact:
# portsdb -u
[Updating the portsdb <format:bdb1_btree> in /usr/ports ... - 7882 port
entries found
.........1000.........2000.........3000.........4000.........5000.........6000.........7000........ ..... done]
# 

I'll verify that "make clean" in /usr/ports works overnight.
