I guess the only bit I'd add for a learner's sake is that in your
LD_LIBRARY_PATH the important bit is the
/usr/local/jdk117/lib/i386
the rest is Mike's system dependant stuff like Postgres libs etc.
Similarly in the CLASSPATH, the jdk classes are succeded here by a
reference to classes bundled with Netscape. You may or may not want the
Netscape ones, and you may have other JAR or ZIP files you want to
include.
e.g.
setenv CLASSPATH
.:/usr/local/jdk1.1.7/classes:/usr/local/myjava/myjarfile.jar
