I have forwarded a query of mine from the UKUG FreeBSD-Users list.

My elm settings are such that the query is attached to this message.
(Perhaps I didn't really want elm to do this for normal text messages, I'll
go and change the settings..!)

I hope the attachment comes through legibly, please accept my apologies if not,
and I'll resubmit my query manually (and consider myself chastised in advance).

I have downloaded (and installed) the port of Star Office 3.1, which
seems to function satisfactorily. I'm running FreeBSD 2.2.5.

I also have ghostscript 5.10 installed, as this seems to be practically
essential to print any non-plaintext file on a non-PS printer, such as the
HP DeskJet 500 I'm using. [1]

Unfortunately, I can't seem to print any files from Star Office!

I've tried printing the chart example file which comes with the application
but get the following errors:

lpr: cannot access diagram
lpr: cannot access in
lpr: cannot access text
sed: stdout: Broken pipe

I have no idea what's going on here..

I don't know how Star Office prints its files, so I have no idea if it
is attempting to output PostScript or whether it is generating some other
format?

I can print plaintext files and PS files (eg, the tiger example) from
the command line happily, using lpr and the 'hpif' ghostscript filter which
I copied from the Printer section of the handbook.

I've just tested, and I can also print webpages happily from Netscape too :-)

I also seem completely unable to print any files which I create, as both
the menu entry and on-screen printer button are ghosted out?

Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

(I can supply my printcap file if it would be helpful)

Thanks,

Dave.

[1] Using ghostscript as a 'print engine' is *such* an excellent idea, IMO.
For those with a PS printer, obviously having applications generate
PS output by default is a gift from the gods anyway, but for the rest of us,
it's a very elegant way of getting consistent output from any application
leaving gs to convert it to specific printer data. Nice.
