Removing patch-aa from boehm-gc and rebuilding that seems to be the current consensus on the best way to fix it -- see -current mailing list for more details. I don't run -current, otherwise I'd have got a handle on this much earlier. I'm in the process of setting up a couple of scratch disks to do so, so more info later.
