I haven't seen an answer to this go by, so here is my meager hint:

I had a similar problem a month or to ago, and I finally found a message 
buried somewhere in a log file that said something to the effect that the 
script couldn't be started during the boot process because it was trying 
to attach to the console.  I had to arrange things so that the background 
process was not attempting to attach to the console.

I'm sorry I don't remember more details.  I hope this at least gets you 
pointed in the right direction.
