The thing is, it works fine from ftp, that's what bugs me. It's got to be a samba thing, I would think. The 3.2 GENERIC kernel is quite a bit larger than a 2.2.x GENERIC (2.3M vs 1.5M) Maybe building a custom kernel would help?
