Rather than edit /etc/group, login as root and enter the following:
#addgroup wheel <your user name>

It worked for me without problem.  I can su to root over any connection.

For some reason, if your PRIMARY group is wheel su will not work.
Set your primary group to something like staff and add yourself to the 
wheel group in the  /etc/group file.
