I need to set up a rotating scheduled backup of 17 Esix machines, 2 solaris machines, one Linux machine, and three FreeBSD machines. Esix (a SVR4 system) doesn't seem to support the rmt device, though everything else does. So, if I put a tape drive on one of the FreeBSD machines, and compile GNU tar for the Esix machines (for rmt support), will that give me the ability to back up from everything? The only other non-commercial option I'm aware of at the moment is to tar to stdout, and pipe that into rsh running dd to tape on the destination machine, and while it fits unix's concept of little tools to get the job done, it still feels funny.
