The default setup is fine, but doesn't really deal well with upgrades. In particular, things on root tend to grow, so that what was once a more than reasonable root is now a tight fit, and going to get worse. It's also tuned more for a server than a workstation. I'd recommend combining root and var into one partition if you're not on a server.
