I've been at it a whole day now, but I'm not getting any further. First of all, after port installation, I manually created a user/group gdm, and copied the needed lines to /etc/pam.conf like pkg-message told me to. Then I had to chown gdm:gdm /usr/X11R6/share/gnome/gdm chmod 750 /usr/X11R6/share/gnome/gdm before gdm would even start. After I did this, the only thing I got when starting gdm was a nice standard X screen, with the moire background and cross cursor, and nothing more. Nothing at all. I tried turning the debug option on in /usr/X11R6/etc/gdm/gdm.conf, but no luck. Below is the typical output of a run. After the logger message 'root: in init' which I added in etc/gdm/Init/Default, the screen stays at the initial X screen. I can't find any evidence of a greeter running. Replacing the greeter in gdm.conf with an xterm also doesn't work, no xterm got run. I'm stumped right now. Has anybody got a setup that works? --Stijn Sep 27 15:27:08 pcwin002 gdm[83332]: gdm_main: Here we go...
