Let me get this straight?

You want to install Linux on a 386, so you ask how to do it on a FreeBSD
mailing list? FreeBSD isn't Linux, so you probably won't get much help here.

Have a look at the Linux Documentation Project at:

	http://sunsite.unc.edu/LDP/

There is a lot of information there about installing Linux systems. 

If you want to install FreeBSD, have a look at the FreeBSD handbook at:

	http://www.freebsd.org/
