As others have said, if you have a cross over cable, just plug them in and
set the ip addresses to the same subnet.

Set the default route on the alpha to the x86s ethernet address. Then if you're
using user ppp, add -alias to the ppp command line and your done!
If you are using kernel ppp (pppd), then I believe you need to use natd.
