You don't have to know awk to use MASTER_SORT, it's actually very
simple.  This is from my make.conf:

MASTER_SORT?=3D	.dk sunet.se .se dk.php.net .no .de mirrorservice.org \
	.uk .at heanet.dl.sourceforge.net .nl

And yes, this know is very underdocumented and somebody(tm) should do
something about that.  AFAIR I found out how to use it by reading some
NetBSD docs and the bsd.port.mk implementation.
