I propose the following. I think it accomplishes both objectives. In the destination /etc directory we do the following in all cases: Assume the file to be installed is xxx. IF xxx does not exist THEN install xxx ELSE BEGIN IF xxx.sample exists AND xxx.sample.old does not exist THEN move xxx.sample to xxx.sample.old. install xxx as xxx.sample.
