You can configure the suspend-from-lid-close in ACPI, doesn't have into involve Mate. hw.acpi.lid_switch_state=S3 .. and yes, when you run startx, it should be loading drm2 and i915kms. If it isn't, then you likely won't see the screen come back after resume.
