In the past I experienced a lot of X crashes where I couldn't get to the console, but a telnet from another machine always worked (so *X* crashed, not FreeBSD). Kill X and restart X. In some cases however the consoles disappeared which could only be reset by rebooting (a *soft* reboot). Of course, if your machine isn't connected to another one, it is effectively a crash :-(.
