I think this is misleading.  Contributers do generaly maintain their
copyright on non-trivial works within the tree (see the Whistle copyright
in most any netgraph sources as an example.)  FreeBSD generally doesn't
require copyright transfer though I believe NetBSD does or at least
strongly encourages it.  If you want it in the tree, you must generally
place it under a BSD compatable license, but the copyright remains
yours.
