I have the 3C595, assy # 03-0027-001 rev C. I have a different card
which explains the version number differences.

I doubt it. There is an EEPROM bit used to flag the bug. If the bit is
0 the bug exists. If the bit is set to 1 it means the bug has been fixed.
Unless the driver totally botched the test the message should be valid.
(I haven't looked at that specific part of the driver code ...)
