The Intel EtherExpress Pro/100B (or Pro/100+) is generally considered to be the best card/driver combination for FreeBSD systems. However, Bill Paul has developed an excellent driver for the 3com XL cards (now a part of the standard distribution). If I've got a machine with a 3Com XL card in it, I don't usually replace it. However, if I'm buying cards for a machine, I buy the Intel cards.
