First, put the following lines in your ~/.Xdefaults file:
XTerm*VT100.background: black
XTerm*VT100.foreground: yellow
XTerm*internalBorder: 20
XTerm*reverseVideo: True
I like this font, too:
XTerm*VT100.font: -misc-fixed-bold-r-normal-*-*-140-*-*-c-*-iso8859-1
Second, put the following line in your ~/.xinitrc file:
xrdb ${HOME}/.Xdefaults
