Yes, it helped a bit further. I've changed the CUPS config as the workaround explained; now on Ctrl-P the printer selection box shows up and I can start the printing; a small information widget about the printing progress comes up and then a nearly empty window (contains no message, only an OK button) and a msg on stderr as 'error message null' (which fits with the absense of any message in the box).
