The linux compatability module does not follow symlinks to directories
as it would follow the directory itself:

[root@ginseng linux]# ls -lad etc
drwxr-xr-x  2 root  wheel  512 Apr 12 23:43 etc
[root@ginseng linux]# ls -lad foo
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root  wheel  4 Apr 12 23:51 foo -> /etc
