I'd junk the ATI card and get an S3-based card like a Number Nine.
The 9FX Motion 771 would be a good choice.

Alternatively, if you're determined to work with inferior hardware, hit
the XFree86 FTP mirrors and grab the 3.1.2D beta release server for the
Mach64 chipset - I understand that it supports several newer revisions
of the hardware.
