In case this help someone who actually knows a little about the code:

  In reference to an earlier message, I could not get SMP to work without
problems with the NIC (a dual port Intel fxp).  On a hunch, I threw a 3Com
3c905c in (single port), reconfigured and recompiled, and it works fine.
This leads me to believe that there is a problem (but only with SMP enabled)
with having two PCI devices in one slot (is this a PCI-PCI bridge?).
