 Based on CM's observations, and a little digging, it looks like the
 problem is that libtool doesn't no how to handle ${PTHREAD_LIBS} when
 ${PTHREAD_LIBS} resolves itself to -pthread--such as it does on -STABLE.
 
 Libtool probably needs to be patched soon, or we'll have an explosion of
 such build failures as more ports rely on PTHREADS.   JMO.
