This seems to go on indefinitely (my patience ran out after ca. 15 minutes.) The process is gone, nothing has the device still open (according to fstat) yet the driver doesn't seem to have noticed it. The drive is a: acd1: CDRW at ata0-slave PIO4 Only detaching the ATA channel via atacontrol made the kernel give up its grip of the drive.
