When I do "startx", the vitrual terminal from which I issue this command will capture the messages related to X. In case of xdm, I did assume that would be ttyv0 implicitely. > Do you have any data about preparations that gdm do? The Handbook mentions /proc to be mounted, but that's not related. The settings gdm_enable="YES" gnome_enable="YES" in /etc/rc.conf would (if I understand the mechanism correctly) correspond to scripts /usr/local/etc/rc.d/gdm /usr/local/etc/rc.d/gnome respectively. So any possibly relevant preparations should be done by those scripts.
