This did change the behaviour. If I have the card inserted at boot time - the machine hangs at boot. If I don't have the card inserted - the machine will boot. As soon as I insert the card, the machine hangs solidly. Removing the card does not "free" up the machine. Note that this is different from before... before (without hw.pcic.inter_path="1") I could insert the card, which would lock down the machine - then remove the card which would free it up...
