If Motif apps are an option, you could try Nedit. Or if they
are not, try xcoral, it has a very nice online help facility
and is pretty well customizable.

There is a character version, called (I think) Grams Commander,
you should be able to locate it on a linux ftp site.
There is also an XForms based (shareware) application called
UC (Unix Cockpit) in the /commerce directory of FreeBSD.

Again a Motif app, llnlxdir, it's a nice filemanager that works
transparantly over ftp connections.
