For the record, mplayer on windows plays the original file fine too, but 
mplayer on windows is about the most inconvenient a program can get.
After poring over the large html manual, I arrive finally at this whopper 
command:
"C:\Program Files\mplayer\mplayer.exe" -osdlevel 3 -fs -monitoraspect 16:10 
"C:\Documents and Settings\bkw\My Documents\My 
Movies\freebsd\bafug3-sam1.mov"

And I have no way to display full screen on the 2nd monitor (which wouldn't 
have needed monitoraspect) and there is no way to pause/resume/seek.
So, no stopping to eat or go to the bathroom or take a phone call without 
starting all over...
