The card lies.
I had a similar modem, and its 16550 emulation sucked; the card would
also freeze the system. If I forced the probe to return 8250 instead,
it worked (sort of). 1 time in ${BIGNUM}, the modem would work of its
own volition.
My recommendation; try another modem.
