You need a recent version of GNU tar to unpack the 1.3.1 sources you download from Sun. In my experience the stock FreeBSD tar won't work (yes, I know its a version of GNU tar, but its an older one). The gtar port should do the trick. I'll update the build instructions to reflect this.
