I would suggest to investigate NetBSD's scanner code (or maybe it was
OpenBSD, i eventually forgot).  IIRC, the author of PINT wrote this
part, Kenneth Stailey (sp?).  I've only seen the feature list so far,
but it looked like a generic scanner solution.
