get a large software  package off the net and compile it on each
and compare the times.. similarly for other real work..
e.g. ray-tracing or grep for a line in some set of files etc.etc.

This is about the only meaningfull benchmark..
of course make sure that both systems have the disks mounted sync or async
as they  have different default settings.
