Yes, the caller can call the new API function you suggest (or set a global variable itself, which is uglier, IMHO). But the only drawback of my idea, that was pointed out so far is that it _adds a new API call_. If such an addition _can_ be tolerated -- and it looks from your response like it can -- I think, solving my problem your way is inferior to my proposed solution.
