The ppp that ships with 2.2.5 insists that you are uid 0 unless 
running ppp in -direct mode.  If you don't like this behaviour (many 
people don't), download and install the latest version from 

  http://www.freebsd.org/~brian

and take a look that the PERMISSIONS section of the man page.
