Good idea.

Read the beginner parts of the FreeBSD Handbook; it's on freebsd.org.

No.  Provided your network cards, etc. are fairly straightforward
(i.e., they get detected by the FreeBSD install program), getting a
router (possibly with NAT) going is a matter of editing one file and
rebooting.  All of what I just said is documented in detail in the
Handbook.

Specific problems can be posted here; easy, beginner issues usually
get correct answers within a couple of hours.
