Try running `xf86config' and pick out your card from the card database.
I've always used that and had excellent results.

I think the group is comp.os.unix.freebsd or comp.os.freebsd.  I don't
read newsgroups so I have no idea.

The Complete FreeBSD is as close as it gets to true FreeBSD stuff,
unfortunately.
