Please follow the exact procedure described here: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/updating-upgrading-freebsdupdate.html (Section 24.2.3 onwards) This was recently updated to cater for people with custom kernel. On the other hand, if you intend to use GENERIC as shown above, you don't need to recompile anything.
