I gave open office a try and it worked great. I didn't use the port. I just downloaded the linux binary and did the old S.O. ./setup - same screens and all. It has been working great for me but, YMMV. ed P.S. I did have to pkg_del my linux_base6 then there was some issue with compiling linux_base7 so I just did a pkg_add -r and it installed perfectly and I've been using it for a week now with no problems.
