You miss the point. It's not the key-map that's broken. It's the
presentation of characters on the screen that is messed up. (Of
course, it's still possible that I have simply mis-diagnosed the
problem.) 

Create the file in a directory in the execution path, chmod the file
to 755 and rehash. When the screen goes nuts, carefully type the name
of the script. If you give the script an all upper-case name
(e.g. FIX-FONT), the command should even echo back correctly.

Of course, if you are running a program, you will need to suspend the
program (CTRL-Z), run the fix, and continue the program (fg).
