I'll second that one - I've done quite a lot of work on various SCSI
peripherals, and Mac-specific firmware is the kiss of death for lots
of models, either in performance or just plain functionality.
(I used to use an Atari TT, which was even more tolerant than the GS, 
and had some _very_ nice tools, and still had lots of grief).
