Owning up to this is probably my last act before I shoot myself. Previously I had /usr/local/bin/kwm& /usr/local/bin/kde& in ~/.xinitrc which worked. I just tried /usr/local/bin/kde& only and it works. Dunno why. Sorry to bother you ;-) Adam.
