That was based on BSD so going from that to FreeBSD felt very comfortable. -When I was first looking at using PC systems to run things like DNS and other services that needed to be up 24 x 7 my Linux installs didn't seem to fair to well compared to my FreeBSD installs. Keep in mind this was more than 3 years ago, things have changed I'm sure ( ie: I hope that Linux is more stable than it was back then ). -Centralized development. Not everyone things of this as plus, but I sure like it. Having web access to the cvs tree has helped on more than once track down what's going one between upgrades. -My feelings that an OS is kernel+userland. Again this is something that many people may not agree with me on, but I like knowing that the FreeBSD kernel is being developed in conjunction with one userland ( not many ). -The ports collection. What can I say, I love that thing :-) -Strives to have a logical and consitant layout. To be honest I've never done benchmarks or any serious testing between Linux and FreeBSD. Over three years ago when I had to decide between the two FreeBSD did a better job, since then I've never had a reason to give up on FreeBSD.
