I'm wondering if someone over at FreeBSD.ORG can help me with this problem I have with my ESS chipset (1688f? ) sound card. I've set the jumpers to Soundblaster Pro 3.1 emulation. I've tried compiling a new kernel with an entry in it for sb0 using irq7 (which is shared with my printer): device sb0 at isa? port 0x220 irq 7 conflicts drq 1 conflicts vector sbintr #options SBC_DMA=3 As you might guess, I've tried a DMA setting of 1 and 3. I know that DMA=3 works just fine in windows and on Doom for msdos, but whenever I try to play an digital audio file in freebsd (cat sound.au >/dev/audio , for instance) the sound will play ok for one second, then shut off for a few seconds and then come back on again (halfway thru the au file) with the accompanying error: root> cat voghormi.au >/dev/audio Dec 7 03:08:09 arlankford /kernel: Sound: DMA timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? Dec 7 03:08:09 arlankford /kernel: Sound: DMA timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? root> It does the same thing for both DMA settings, but playmidi -4, -f works ok. Here's what the kernel says while it's booting up: Dec 7 02:00:48 arlankford /kernel: apm0: disabled, not probed. Dec 7 02:00:48 arlankford /kernel: sb0 at 0x220 irq 7 drq 1 on isa Dec 7 02:00:48 arlankford /kernel: sb0: <SoundBlaster Pro 3.1> Dec 7 02:00:49 arlankford /kernel: opl0 at 0x388 on isa Dec 7 02:00:49 arlankford /kernel: opl0: <Yamaha OPL-3 FM> Dec 7 02:00:51 arlankford lpd[99]: restarted Dec 7 02:01:34 arlankford /kernel: Sound: DMA timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? Dec 7 02:01:48 arlankford last message repeated 7 times Is the problem fairly simple? (I hope that it is of course.. I know when I'm in over my head!)
