Especially lately there are quite a few people there who have nothing better to do than chat about just any topic that crosses their mind, no matter if it is really off-topic. So the traffic is at times large and the S/N ratio sometimes terrible, not something a busy sysadmin would want to monitor. If you just want the security advisories, you should pick security-notifications. But they are also mailed to -announce, plus a there you get a few other items that you might be interested in as a FreeBSD user. The advisories are also mailed to eg bugtraq.
