Sybase has a beta of a jdbc implementation that doesn't require
installation of binary client libs, you only need Java.

They have what looks like a generic Unix version at the following site:

http://www.sybase.com/products/internet/jdbcconnect/jdbcreg.html

It'd be interesting to see if you can access SQL Server directly from a PC
running FreeBSD.
